However, a New York Times reporter tweeted later in the evening that a stranger grabbed McDormand's Oscar and tried to steal it.
He was quickly stopped and then left, but...wow.

It turns out the (almost) thief was Terry Bryant Djmatari, and he live streamed the whole thing. He picked up the Oscar, pretended it was his, and asked people to congratulate him. Wow! He then gets the skinny on hot parties from his new Oscar friends, all while holding the Oscar.
According to Variety, Bryant has been arrested on the charge of grand theft after he was identified in photographs and this damning video.
