A local costume company, Cumbria Superheroes, decided to send out 'Batman' to chase disguised pranksters and reassure children and their families.
Photos of the superhero have been shared on Facebook by the local BBC.
"'Crazy clowns' beware... Batman is in Whitehaven.Cumbria Superheroes heard that many children had been left traumatised by the clowns lurking around the town.So now Batman is patrolling the streets so that kids (and adults?) can feel at ease."
Scores of U.S.-inspired clown-related incidents have taken place over the weekend across the UK, with people people dressed as clowns armed with knives and jumping out of bushes, frightening children and chasing pedestrians.
In Kent alone, police received reports of 59 incidents in three days.
Commander Julian Bennett, who has assessed the "Killer Clown" incidents in London, said in a press release that three of the incidents are considered criminal offences and have left people feeling scared, anxious and intimidated.
He urged those responsible to consider the impact their actions have on others.
Northumbria police officers have urged fancy dress shops to not sell clown costumes to children, according to The Guardian.
