Mari Takahashi was the younger tribe's first casualty in Survivor: Millennials Vs. Gen-X,Watch The Girl Next Door (2017) Korean movie and she's very salty about it.
The move was a surprising early blindside against a strong player who seemed poised to go far. And it was especially unexpected given that the Millennial tribe already had a strong reason to break up the Figgy/Taylor romance. Couples are a dangerous thing in the game of Survivor.
SEE ALSO: Bernie Sanders sparked the idea for 'Survivor: Millennials Vs. Gen-X'Even in her short time on the show, Mari stood out. The oldest member of the Millennials crew, at 31, she had what seemed like a good group of allies around her and a smart, chill approach to gameplay in the early days.
We chatted with Mari after the unfortunate Tribal vote about her premature exit, her place within the Millennial tribe and how her "Gamer" occupation -- Mari is a popular member of the Smosh Games crew -- did/didn't inform her Survivorplay.
I've got to tell you, I work in the games media and Survivoris just something I cover because I'm a big fan. So I was really rooting for you! I wanted to see you go much further.
Oh man. Me, you and the rest of the internet. I usually don't peruse Reddit because Reddit just scares the hell out of me. But one night I hated myself enough to be like, 'All right let's do this.' And you know? There's a lot of people backing me up. There's a lot of people rooting for me. And I'm sorry for disappointing ... the internet.
I understand beingdisappointed, but it's not like youdisappointed. You were totally blindsided. That was one of those moves where it's someone who's clearly going to go far in the game and other people see that, and they just turned the tables.
Yeah, I am beyond salty. And my Twitter feed will show that. I've deemed myself the #SaltQueen and I will wear that title for a little while, until I get this out of my system.
So did you have any inkling going into Tribal Council that this was going to happen?
You know, it's weird. You don't ever go into Tribal comfortable. And if you do, then you should be worried. By no means was I comfortable. I looked at it again, and ... I was so naïve. I don't think it comes from a place of cockiness. I think it was just like, 'Oh yeah, the spotlight is on these other people, so I think we should be fine. Right? We've got the votes ... question mark?'
I know that my mind was there, and in hindsight ... it's classic Survivor. If the spotlight's on other people, you should be worried that it's going somewhere else. It's always this hat trick. It's always this thing where it's like a blind turn.
You know when you watch sports? I don't even sports, but when you watch it and you see it happen and you're like, 'No, clearly you should have gone right, but you went left!' That's what [watching the] playback was like for me.
And you know, it seems like Survivor101 to me. You break up the power couple. That's what you alwaysdo.
You do! Right? I'm not crazy! Yeah. Yeah, yeah.
That was the plan. That WAS the plan. But you know? Pretty people have a way of playing people. I'm guilty of it. If you're pretty and you tell me to go, I'm like 'All right, I'll follow you. I'll do it.'
That's how I am in real life. I understand. That's how humans work. When we're charmed by somebody, we're swayed easily. When we see a glimmer of hope that we're going to be accepted, we go with that. It's just very human, and I understand that.
Even Figgy and Taylor falling in love on an island. That's very human. We walk a very thin line [between] game and real life, and on that island it gets blurred. Because you go into it thinking, 'Oh it's all a game, I'm going to be this cutthroat killer and I won't feel emotions. It's just going to be a straight line from A to B, to the win.' But once you're out there, you're so deprived of everything in your entire life that it consumes you. It becomes life instead of a game.
I think the people who are able to pull their asses out of their heads [and remember] it's not life, it's a game, those are the ones that can make it, psychologically.
Do you think the age difference between you, as the oldest member of the tribe, and everyone else had a role to play in what I think a lot of Survivorfans would view as the reckless move of letting that power couple stick around?
I think more than age ... it has to do with phases in your life. In a romantic sense, that phase for me is [over]. I'm not in the college or post-college romantic phase where you're like, 'Yeah, you know. I just found this cute guy on the island and I think we'll just play around a little bit.'
Emotionally, I'm not there anymore. So in that sense, maybe I am a little distant from it and it comes across like I don't get it. Maybe on the island it came across as me being like, 'Ah I don't get it so we need to tear these guys apart.'
I can respect that these kids fell in love on the island, that's cool. Love finds you at times that you least expect it. I know that in my life; I found my boyfriend of six years at a time when I'm like, 'I'm single and independent and I don't need a guy.' So I get it. Love finds you when it finds you.
I identify myself as a Millennial and I identify myself as a Gen X'er as well, in the sense that I truly believe I have Gen X values at the core because of my ballet training. This rigid, old school training where you consume yourself with ballet and that's how you earn your stripes, and that's how you get to call yourself a ballerina.
At the same time I have a Millennial mentality where Peter Pan is my god. You can't tell me what to do and I'll never be in a cubicle.
So I get both sides of it. And I think on the Millennial tribe we shared a lot of those values. As much as Gen X wants to think that we don't come with values [like the belief] that hard work is important, I disagree. I think we all understand that hard work is important. And I think we all understand that we do that in our real lives.
So in a lot of ways, I don't think that the age difference was an issue. I think it was phases [of life].
Being that playing games is part of how you make your living, did you have any preconceived notions going into thisgame that were then shattered when you were faced with the reality of flesh and blood people who are right in front of you?
Not so much games, but I think people in general. As adults do, we kind of start to shed people in our lives that just don't jive well with you anymore. And that's normal. That's fine. You're not going to get along with everybody in this world.
So we start to create our own tribes in real life, and that becomes your friends circle. You're like-minded and that's why you keep these people close.
When I got on that island, I [realized that I had] kind of forgotten what it's like to be around so many different people, and in such close quarters, and in a way where you have to get along to survive. You have to work together.
I forgot what it's like to be around so many people who don't have the same core values as myself. So that was an interesting perspective change for me.
It was like, 'Oh man, I'm spoiled back at home. I can talk to anyone about The Lord of the Ringsand 13 people will jump at the conversation.' As soon as I got there, I realized... I'm so weird. I was among people who didn't give a crap about Suicide Squadcoming out in a few months.
It was weird, where I [realized] I had nothing to talk about here. No one liked the same things as me. And because of that, I reverted back to 14-year-old Mari in high school, where it's like 'Hey you guys, like this?' And everyone's like 'No, you're dumb.' And I'm like, 'Yeah, I'm dumb. Nobody likes me.'
So it was really, really weird for me to get back into that mentality and have to boost myself up. I think the 'freaks and geeks' squad coming together was really reflective of how a few of us were feeling.
Last thing I want to ask: Would you do it again?
Oh, in a heartbeat. In a heartbeat, absolutely. Right now my Twitter and the newest video I put up on YouTube probably doesn't reflect that because I'm salty as hell. But I'm like, 'Put me in, coach.' Game over, replay. I've inserted my coin, I'm ready for that replay.
Yeah. I love the game. It doesn't compare to anything else. I thought I could just compare it to other games, board games like Spyfallor Secret Hitlerwhere you lie to win.
In this game it's the same, but Survivoris done in a way where the game becomes your life. And it's hard to walk that line and remember that it's just a game.
