The Writer's Bullpen (2009)Avengers 4 trailer has finally dropped, and with it the world now knows the title (Avengers: Endgame) and release month (April 2019) of the most anticipated movie of next year.
Since April is neither today nor tomorrow, it's time to enter an entertainment writer's favorite liminal space: that of wild, funky speculation and close trailer readings!
SEE ALSO: The 'Avengers: Endgame' trailer is here and it's looking like real bad news for our friendsTo begin, Tony Stark/Iron Man is drifting in space after his defeat on Titan at the end of Avengers: Infinity War. Things aren't looking great for Tony, since the small ship he escaped on is out of food, water, and soon to be out of oxygen.
A split second shot in the trailer shows that Nebula, the only other Snap survivor on Titan, is with him. And if anyone feels like getting worried, the shot shows her touching his chest. Like to check his heartbeat. To see if he's...y'know. Dead.
While recording his final message to his fiancé Pepper Potts, Tony says that he has no promise of "rescue." Pepper Potts has worn a version of the Iron Man armor in the comics, and the name of that armor? Rescue.
It's high time Pepper suited up and saved Tony's butt again. And Nebula's, I guess.
These two buddies have been together a long time, so it's fitting that they're working through the end of the world together. Steve and Natasha both appear to be keeping order at the compound, even if there isn't anyone else (besides Bruce Banner, still Hulkless) to help keep things in shape.
It looks like the fate of the world rests on these three OG Avengers. The world is probably in good hands.
That's about it really. Interesting that he's in his earth clothes and not his space hero duds, and that Stormbreaker and Rocket are nowhere to be seen.
While it's been speculated that Shuri survived the Snap, a quick look at Bruce Banner's computer screen listing those considered missing/dusted includes the Princess of Wakanda.
Of course, that list also includes Peter Parker, who is definitely dust, and Scott Lang, who we know from the end of Ant-Man and the Waspis notdust, just trapped in the Quantum Realm.
Everyone who could have pulled poor Scott out of the Quantum Realm turned to dust at the end of Ant-Man and the Wasp, but the Endgametrailer leaves viewers with a quick, funny clip of Scott showing up at the Avengers compound.
Previous interviews have suggested that the mysteries of the Quantum Realm will play a huge role in Endgame, and ending their first trailer with a hint that Scott escaped and came to Steve and Natasha supports his heavily. Sometimes big gifts come in really, really small packages.
Clint Barton/Hawkeye, who was missing from Infinity Waron account of being on house arrest after the events of Captain America: Civil War, has a new hairdo, a new vocation, and a new weapon. Natasha encounters him cleaning off a sword, presumably after killing the dead guy laying on the ground in front of him.
It's possible Barton's family was lost in the Snap and he's turned to vigilantism, as his costume and swords suggest that he has taken on his comic book alias Ronin, a character inspired by masterless samurai.
There isn't a ton of Thanos in the Endgametrailer, which makes sense because his work here is kind of done. What shots there are of the big purple meanie show him walking through a field of flowers while his Infinity Wararmor stays on that weird scarecrow thing last seen at the end of the last movie. He's presumably still on Titan II, the home planet he escaped to after Snapping.
